Wayanad Waterfalls



For the adventurous ones this is the time to enjoy the wild beauty of the waterfalls in Wayanad.

Blessed with its natural beauty, wayanad’s enchanting waterfalls attracts large number of tourists. The major waterfalls where tourists are permitted by the department of forest and sentinel rock waterfalls at soochippara and the meenmutty waterfalls at chitragiri.

The sentinel Rock waterfall at vellarimala village near chooramala in meppadi panchayat is a picnic spot as well as trekking centre. The sentinel rock, a rock of more than 200m in height, is ideal for rock climbing.

The sentinel rock falls has grown into a major tourism destination being relatively safer than other waterfalls and owing to its proximity to the nearest town, Meppadi

The waterfalls at soochippara near meppadi are really a treasure of nature and the stretches of waterfalls ranging at places from 100 to 300 feet height are a treat to the eyes. The pool below provides for water rafting, swimming, bathing, etc.The tree top huts at soochippara give a unique view of the valleys of the Western Ghats and the glimmering shallow waters of the surrounding spring

There is about 30 minute drive from meppadi through tea plantations to the falls. The first level of the fall is the longest and the easiest to reach. Reaching the second and third ranges is a highly risky affair and the forest department has banned trekking to those destinations after a series of landslips in those areas during the last monsoon.

Large number of tourists mainly from Karnataka, Andrapradesh and Tamilnadu visit the spot during weekends .The latest report shows that as many as 1, 76,043 tourists, including visited the waterfalls from jan1 to oct 31 on 2010 .the district Tourism promotion council has constructed 900 metre granite pavement from the soochippara junction to the waterfall and the forest department has erected bamboo benches on eitherside of the pavements to further tap the potential of the destination
