Foreign Stake in Indian Airlines

It may soon allow the airline to buy foreign equity participation in domestic carriers, a senior government official said here Wednesday. We are in talks with the custodians of industry. We must first evaluate how much additional investment we need in the form of FDI in the aviation sector, Secretary M. Madhavan Nambiar said aviation chambers of Indo-US trade summit. Although it allows foreign investment up 49 per cent in the Indian air operators, foreign carriers are still prevented from possession of the stake in domestic carriers. Many foreign carriers, however, have shown interest in having a stake in Indian Airlines. Nambiar said the government signed a bilateral security agreement with the U.S. next year, which would help both countries share their technologies. The bilateral aviation safety (BASA) is expected to help Indian companies launch their products more effectively in the global level, an official of Ministry of Aviation said.
